#JoiningTheMarineTeam

By: Sydney, Leah, April and Josh

Did you know, in the Los Angeles area alone, ten metrics tonnes of plastic fragments such as grocery bags, straws and soda bottles are carried to the Pacific Ocean everyday? Around one million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals die annually in the oceans around the world due to choking, intestinal blockage and starvation as a result of plastic pollution. 2014-04-08-PlasticBagsEarthDrReeseHalter.jpg

Our position in helping this disaster may seem insignificant as it is an immense task to tackle. However, the NPSS Marine Team has a way to help! Preventing plastic products from being littered and entering major waterways is an excellent way to start. We have created the hashtag, “#JoiningTheMarineTeam,” as our local goal to help promote UN Global Goal 14. The primary purpose of this hashtag is to not only prevent littering, but to also promote the benefits of recycling, and spread awareness about the negative affects your plastic waste could potentially have on the oceans. Your job in order to help us with this task is not only easy, but fun! Simply pick up a piece of garbage or plastic you find or intend to throw out, and take a selfie of you disposing of it in the appropriate way. Tweet the photo you have taken, making sure to include the hashtag representing that you’ve joined the team, as well as the good you’ve done in the world! We will make sure to retweet it to spread the word and get others involved! Do your part in helping save our world’s oceans, and join the Marine Team!
