Why we continue to fight for Gender Equality
A YOUTH FOR EQUALITY
Blog by: Emma & Sarai
Our global goal is number 5 in the United Nation's list of goals. There are millions of problems that plague the earth and gender equality is just one of them. Gender Equality is defined as "The state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender." The human race has taken steps towards gender equality creating greater opportunities, rights, and progress towards said global goal but inequality has not been suppressed. We have achieved some equality by allowing women to vote, offering equal job opportunities to both men and women, and encouraging women's freedom of speech in political places. These are just a few examples of progress that has been made towards equality. That being said, some progress made in one area of the world may not apply to others. An example being that in some places women can vote but in others, that is not allowed. Although there has been progress, the progress has not been made worldwide. All we can do is continue to empower and encourage women as we fight for equality around the world. Gender equality is a human fight, not a female fight and achieving this is so important because the female population represents half of the World population, women and girls are put at a disadvantage because of gender inequality. Just because a woman is allowed to vote in Canada, it does not mean that a woman is allowed to vote in other countries. We need to create equal opportunity for men and women worldwide. We owe it to the women who make up half our world but continue to be oppressed and that is why achieving gender equality is important.
