UN Global Goals: Gender Equality
Blogged by: Emma and Sarai

Goal number five of the UN Global Goals is Gender Equality. I chose Gender Equality because it is still a very important issue in today's age, and there is a lot of preconceived notions about being a feminist and what it actually means. The definition of Feminism is “the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men” which is not very hard to understand. Lots of people have this idea that all feminists are angry women who hate men and are offended by everything, in some cases feminists like that are not good feminists and don't look at the real issues at hand. I fight for gender equality so young girls around the world can go to school. So women are paid equally for the same job men do. So women have access to contraceptives and safe abortions. So men can have input in child custody cases. There are many reasons to fight for gender equality which makes its importance unique to everyone.  Gender equality is not a female fight, it is a human fight.

To raise awareness on gender equality my group will be making lots of posters, tweets and pamphlets, as well as an info booth with activities to help educate people on gender equality in a fun but informative way. We would like to work with the public library to set up displays of books and information on influential women and the importance of equality. We would also like to fundraise some money or supplies for a women's shelter by selling t-shirts, bracelets, baked goods, and holding a drive for whatever supplies they need.

We both feel really strong about gender equality and hope that we can spread awareness and help educate others. Even if only one person changes their opinion or learns something we will be satisfied because it shows we made a lasting impact, even if it's small.
