Why is Movember relevant to our Global Goal?

Our Global Goal is Gender Equality and we have created our campaign to raise awareness and to help the United Nations achieve said goal by 2030. A part of our campaign, ‘Youth for Equality’ is to gain awareness and support among all people, male and female. So, we decided to run “Movember.” Movember is a 30 day event that was established in 2004 to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer and depression for men. We feel that gender equality generally affects women and girls but in some very, very, specific cases, men are not given as much support as women are. Movember is a relevant cause in our gender equality fight and the funding and awareness for prostate cancer is an example of a specific case. Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death among men and breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women but the difference is, breast cancer is more known and is given more funding. Example: in 2009, there was 872 million dollars raised for breast cancer worldwide versus the 390 million dollars raised for prostate cancer. In 2010, there was 891 million dollars raised for breast cancer versus 399 million dollars raised for prostate cancer. You can imagine that the following years continued at this rate. The is a significant difference between funding and awareness of the 2 cancers and as advocates for gender equality, we would like to create equal opportunities for women as well as men. Gender equality is a HUMAN fight, not a female fight and we would like to help create awareness and support for men fighting prostate cancer the same way we would raise awareness and give support to women.
