Our Green School

How lucky are we to attend school everyday in a building that takes the environment into consideration?  Our school is a wonderful example of environmental sustainability.  Read the attached article about our GREEN building!

Nottawasaga School Facility

Picture
Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School has been specifically designed to be green from the ground up, including the use of geothermal ground source heating and cooling. The design team, which included students, staff and the community, were deeply committed to environmental stewardship in planning all aspects of the facility.

Its physical structure is based on environmentally sustainable principles of energy reduction, use of renewable high-efficiency energy, and conservation. Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School will actually supply energy to the grid through photovoltaic solar panels located on the roof of the school, producing approximately 75,000 kWh per year of clean energy.

Built with an abundance of windows, the building itself will use the natural energy of the sun and earth while reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. Even the school’s domestic hot water will be produced through solar energy. The atrium is designed to facilitate natural ventilation through a stack effect along with CO2 sensors that will automatically control the amount of fresh air supplied to the building.  Finally, Nottawasaga Pines is about teaching and learning, and therefore the building’s energy systems will also become teaching tools that will allow students to visually monitor energy consumption levels right in the main atrium.
