Surprise WASTE AUDIT at NPSS!
Blogged by Jillian and The Green Team

Yesterday our group  (The Green Team) led our class in a school wide waste and energy consumption audit. We went to each and every room in our school to check if their garbage and recycling bins were contaminated. Contamination is when something that can be recycled that is placed in the garbage or vice versa.
We also checked to make sure that all projectors were off when not in use and all the lights were off in classrooms that were empty.
We found that most of the bins were contaminated and we want to work harder to make sure people know what to do with their waste.  It is a small but significant step to improving our schools ecological footprint.

Our waste audit data.

  1. Do you guys think there would be less contamanation in glue, grey and garbage bins if there were papers above each can in each classroom showing examples of the types of things that go in each bin, like the ones in the hallways of the schools? I know sometimes even I am not sure about some things, and find those examples helpful!

  2. I think it would help to have posters to show what goes in each bin but I think there will still be contamination because some people won't take the time to look at the posters

    1. I know I was surprised by how many coffee cups were in the wrong bin, I wasn't expecting that, and it really shocked me when some rooms didn't even have recycling bins. I think we should be getting recycling bins for every room.

  4. I think this was an awesome waste audit! And it was a great idea!! Are we going to be helping your group do another one to see if our school has done a better job, so far, at recycling etc?

  5. We will be doing more waste audits, but I don't think it will be one where the whole class participates. If you really want to help though let us know or come to the green team meeting on Tuesday at lunch in the hospitality room.

  7. I was very surprised how the staff rooms where the worst for not recycling, we found so many containers and papers in the garbage when there was a recycling bin right beside the garbage!
