Why Not Recycle?

By: Brendan
Everyone knows that they should recycle, but do they? A study was done in the US and they found that on average every person in the US will make about 1.5 tonnes of garbage each. Of this garbage, 75% of it can be recycled, but only 30% is recycled. That means that 45% of the garbage could have been recycled. That means that of the 1500 pounds of garbage, 600 pounds of it could have been recycled. If we save 600 pounds per person in the United States of America which has a total population of 318.9 million people, we could save 191,340,000 tonnes of garbage in just one year.
Some people think, “Why should I recycle? It's just a waste of my time, and it ends up in the same place, right?” They couldn't be more wrong. If you recycle just a single pop can, the amount of energy saved is enough to let you listen to any music album. If someone took all of the 36 billion pop cans that were thrown out and sold it for scrap aluminum, they would make $600,000,000 dollars. That to me seems like a lot of money to be made from just the aluminum pop cans. So is recycling really a waste of time? It is not only good for the planet, but there is also some money to be made.
