Stool into a New Bedside Table!
By Sam, Brendan, Matt, Janson and Tristan

Matt from our group brought in a worn down stool and we decided to turn it into a bed side table, and now we are almost done!
First we glued the weak board with wood glue, then we sanded the whole stool down. After we primed the stool for paint. We decided to paint the stool a light blue. But before we paint the stool blue we wanted to create the second shelf. To do this, we took twine and wrapped it around the even bars tightly and secured it with wood glue. After finishing the twine shelfs, we painted the wood areas a nice baby blue.

At the beginning of the month, we decided to raise funds for a Canadian Feed The Children village in Ethiopia, to help fund causes we felt to be worthwhile. Some examples;
-Access to Professional Health Care
- Healthy Foods and Nutrition
-Clean Drinking Water Sources
-Schooling for all Children Boys & Girls
-The Teaching of Leadership Skills to help Develop Sustainable Communities

We have done it! With just 4 days to go in the Poverty 2 Power campaign, we have reached our fundraising goal of 48 t-shirts! Each shirt helps support the initiatives above, and will make a world of change in the lives of 4000 impoverished people.  Although we have had our challenges, it feels great to know that we have accomplished such a worthwhile goal, that will help so many people! Huge thanks to everyone who has supported- The shirts should be mailed to your homes by December 10th (If you ordered online) or if you paid in cash, you can expect them by December 6th.

Prayers for Paris
Blogged By: Jessica

On Friday November 13th 2015, Paris was faced with numerous terrorist attacks that left people living in fear and shock while grieving the loss of loved ones. Some important things to know from these attacks are:
  • There was a total of 129 people declared dead
  • 352 people were reported wounded, 99 of those injured are in critical condition
  • 89 of those who were killed came from one venue, a concert for the Eagles of Death Metal at the Bataclan theatre
  • Fans were forced to evacuate the national stadium where their soccer team was taking on their arch rival Germany when they heard bombs detonate in nearby restaurants
  • Terrorist group ISIS has claimed responsibility
  • The French government has declared a state of emergency

People all around the world have been supporting those in Paris in many different ways. On the night of the 13th, many different major cities throughout the world lit up their most famous attractions in the colours of the French flag, facebook has added a temporary profile picture option where people can add the colour of the French flag on top of their profile picture for a few days to show support for those in need, and Jean Jullien has created a “Peace for Paris” Illustration that has been trending as people show their support for Paris.

Another Friday the 13th Goes Down in History
Blogged by Emily
Friday the 13th causes fear for many. Experts believe that a combination of the number 13 (an irregular number) and Friday are unlucky. There are many different reasons why the number 13 is unlucky, some of which are because Judas was the 13th guest at the last supper. There are 12 months in a year and 12 Olympic Gods; not 13.  Friday was unlucky in some cases like when Eve gave Adam the apple; they were banished the following Friday, and Good Friday is the day Jesus was crucified. In some Toronto buildings the elevators will not have a 13th floor; they skip directly to the 14th. People who fear Friday the 13th (or the number 13 in general) suffer from something called triskaidekaphobia.
A lot of tragic events in history have occurred on a Friday the 13th. Five bombs
destroyed the Palace Chapel in 1940, there was a huge storm in Bangladesh in 1970, an unusually early snowstorm in Buffalo in 2006, and so much more. Many tragic events have occurred over the course of history whether it was on a 13th or a Friday, and there will be more to come. By Friday, April 13th, 2029 scientists believe that an asteroid will make a very close encounter with our planet. However, that is the future which we do not need to worry about yet. This past Friday the 13th, Paris had a terrorist attack, Japan and Mexico had an earthquake, a funeral was bombed in Baghdad, and there was a suicide bombing in Beirut. Thousands of people are grieving the loss of loved ones. We are all praying together for all of the lives lost. Many countries have shown their support to France by illuminating the streets with the colour of the France flag; blue, white, and red.
When France lost its light, the world's lights turned on. France supported the United States after 9/11 so now it is the world's turn to support France. We must always stay together as a nation.

On Monday, November 16th our group got approval to host a Staff vs. Student Dodgeball Game. On December 9th and 11, in the gym, students will have the chance to duel their teachers in a fierce game of dodgeball, and all of the money raised will be given to charity! We will be charging $2 per person or $5 for a group! Students may come to the gym to cheer and watch the game, but they are encouraged to donate some change.CULd8XzUAAEv_xm.jpg-large

Want to know some facts about world hunger!?
Blog by: Rachel, Vincent, and Chantel

Are you hungry? Did you know…

  • 11.3% of the world’s population is hungry. That’s about 805 million people who go undernourished on a daily basis, consuming less than the recommended 2,100 calories a day.
  • Roughly 98% of hungry people live in underdeveloped countries.
  • When a mother is undernourished during pregnancy, the baby is often born undernourished, too. Every year, 17 million children are born this way due to a mother’s lack of nutrition before and during pregnancy.
  • While hunger exists worldwide, 526 million hungry people live in Asia.

Unfortunately, this blog is not to entertain you, or make you laugh, this blog is to show the reader that millions of people do go hungry everyday. What can you do to help?

Poverty is the worst form of violence!
By: Brittany, Rosalyn, Emma, Rebecca

In today's world there is many types of violence, and they vary from verbal violence to gun violence and war. But did you know? That poverty is one of the worst types of violence. This may make you think and wonder “how is poverty the worst?”

Let us, Poverty 2 Power group tell you why: Poverty is a type of human violence that doesn't just affect the body but also the human mind. For example, young children who live in poverty often have to fend for themselves because their parent are sick of not around to care for them, think how that affects their state of mind!

Here’s a little eye opener about poverty.

“n this new century, millions of people in the world's poorest countries remain imprisoned, enslaved, and in chains. They are trapped in the prison of poverty. It is time to set them free. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom."
