Our take on the news...
School Shootings and Deaths
When will it end?
___
By Sam Wesson

Unbelievable amount

“Since 1992, there have been 387 school shootings in the US alone”

At least 152 school shootings in 2015 in America -  http://everytownresearch.org/school-shootings/
School shooting and violence that leads to death and injury have been happening for too long, when will we realize that something need to change. School shooting after school shooting people are outraged and families separated.
With a look of anger and frustration on his face, Obama spoke forcefully against school shooting and how they are unnecessary and that the amount of resources being spent on school shooting are not enough. He pointed to U.S. lawmakers' refusal to pass gun control measures that he said would curb mass shootings and reduce the level of gun violence.
The USA is not the only place where school shootings are present but it is where school shootings happen the most in a country so developed.

The Latest School shooting
Today (Thursday October 22, 2015) there was another school shooting, "Students fled from the Kronan school in Trollhattan, near Goteborg, Sweden's second-largest city, after the attack in a cafe near the school just after 10 a.m. local time, police said" -http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/sweden-school-attack-1.3283326. This latest school shooting resulted in a student and teacher killed and another student and teacher wounded. The attached was wearing a mask and supposedly had one or two large knives and a sword.

"Fuxborg said police fired two shots, one of which hit the attacker, a 21-year-old man from Trollhattan. The motive for the attack was not known, he added"

First piece of furniture!
By Matt, Brendan, Sam, Jason and Tristan
Our group received our first wooden project to update
Today we got our hands on a dusty cabinet from the local shop teacher. We're really looking forward to collaborating with our outside sources in order to keep the furniture coming in. We plan on giving it a complete makeover from glass staining to slight touch ups. Hopefully we can keep the projects coming in with the help of others! Definitely excited to work on this one!

Why Not Recycle?

By: Brendan
Everyone knows that they should recycle, but do they? A study was done in the US and they found that on average every person in the US will make about 1.5 tonnes of garbage each. Of this garbage, 75% of it can be recycled, but only 30% is recycled. That means that 45% of the garbage could have been recycled. That means that of the 1500 pounds of garbage, 600 pounds of it could have been recycled. If we save 600 pounds per person in the United States of America which has a total population of 318.9 million people, we could save 191,340,000 tonnes of garbage in just one year.
Some people think, “Why should I recycle? It's just a waste of my time, and it ends up in the same place, right?” They couldn't be more wrong. If you recycle just a single pop can, the amount of energy saved is enough to let you listen to any music album. If someone took all of the 36 billion pop cans that were thrown out and sold it for scrap aluminum, they would make $600,000,000 dollars. That to me seems like a lot of money to be made from just the aluminum pop cans. So is recycling really a waste of time? It is not only good for the planet, but there is also some money to be made.

Global Goal #2

Our Local Goal

Blogged by: Vinny, Chantel, and Rachel

The last couple of days our group has discussed what we want to do to help end hunger in our community. As a group we have decided that to assist locally, we would like to collect 1000 non-perishable food items for the Barrie Food Bank.

The decision to collect non-perishable food items for the Barrie Food Bank was made upon learning that almost half of Canadian citizens who go to food banks live in Ontario.  We also discovered that 38% of food banks said they did not  have enough food to feed their clients. This fact was extremely shocking to us. We believe that those food banks could of potentially  had enough food to feed their clients just by a few donations from their community. In collecting and donating non-perishable food items to local food banks, we as a group hope to  strive towards a common goal to keep hunger out of our community.

UN Sustainable Development Goals
Approved!
Upcycling to Save The Planet
___
By Sam, Brendan, Jansen, Tristan and Matt
Our groups proposal got approved!
To help the UN complete their sustainable development goal we are going to be upcycling old furniture that would have been or has been thrown out, and making it desirable again. In doing this we hope make people realize that they don't have to throw out old furniture, decreasing the demand for natural resources.

Helping With Health has Approval, Twitter, and Posters!
Blogged By: Sam,  Alyssa, Jarrett, Zach

Helping with health got approval from the principal to host a dance to promote heart health, and promote the local blood drive! Our group was very excited, and knowledgeable of our plans and goals.

Our group has made a twitter account “HelpersOfHealth”. We provide facts about blood, as well as heart health, hoping to promote donating blood, as well as exercise.

Our group is currently focuses on making posters for the Blood Drive at the Angus Rec. Center on November 5th, 2015.

Poverty 2 Power; Action Plan!
Blogged By; Brittany, Rebecca, Emma and Rosalyn
So much has happened in the last few days in Ms. McLeod’s Grade 12 World Issues Class! Many of our groups have been approved by Mr.Pino for our Global Goals project, including us! We are so excited to start exploring and documenting local and global poverty through our project and make a real change in our community as well as globally.

Local
We decided to get out onto the streets of Angus and Barrie, collecting footage with the goal of making a documentary. This informative mini movie will feature poverty based facts and statistics about communities surrounding us. As well, our goal is to catch footage of the daily hardships those in poverty may face. We hope that this will give an inside perspective on what it could be like to live in poverty and to show just how local poverty is. Some of us plan on visiting organizations such as ‘Out of the Cold Barrie’, ‘Salvation Army’ and even the Angus food bank- just steps outside of our classroom.  With the help of the Nottawasaga Pines Production Crew, we can’t wait to make this idea become a reality as we feel it will really help students, teachers, community members and the online world to have a new perspective of poverty.
Global
We really wanted our Global Actions to reach as far as possible. After lots of brainstorming, we had the idea to sponsor a child who was experiencing severe poverty in a developing country. However, we felt as though this was not doing enough to help people on a large scale. We have decided to sponsor the entire village of Gelan Idero, Uganda… that’s a whole total of 850 families or 4,220 individual people!! The small community is an impoverished area, where more than 98% of families rely on farming for their income and source of food. Our sponsorship will help the community develop sanitation and water systems, create more sustainable jobs and start an education system for children of both genders. We hope that as a school ‘village’, we can welcome the Gelan Idero community as our ‘sister village’, as we can communicate with the locals through a blog! We can’t wait to make a sustainable difference and put an end to poverty in the lives of over 4000 men, women and children! Stay posted for our fundraising ideas!!!   ways-sponsor-village-gelan-image2
